The historic acquisition of African craft raises questions about how we today engage with the purchasing of objects– Specifically from West Africa. Today access to the indigenous crafts are readily available for purchase and tools used in the traditional Ashanti weaving process like heddle pulleys serve a spiritual function that connects the Ashanti to their ancestors.

The integral role nature plays in the spiritual beliefs of the Ashanti are reflected in my series of collages and paper maquettes. The stool highlights the influence of African craft within contemporary design.
